Skills in Demand Visa

Skills in Demand Visa

In July 2025, the Temporary Skills Shortage Visa 482 was replaced by the Skills in Demand Visa 482. The Skills in Demand Visa has three streams. This page outlines the requirements of the Skills in Demand Visa.

Core skills stream

The core skills stream of the visa is valid for up to four years (or five if the visa holder is from Hong Kong).

This visa allows employers to bring skilled workers from overseas in situations where they are unable to find an Australian resident who is appropriately skilled.

The visa is available to a person whose occupation is on the Core Skills Occupation List and where the nominated salary for the position meets the Core Skills Income threshold (currently $76,515PA). The applicant must have at least one year of relevant work experience.

The Core Skills Occupation List includes the following occupations:

  • School principal
  • Pig farmer
  • Television journalist
  • Mathematician.

Specialist skills stream

The specialist skills stream of the visa is valid for up to four years (or five if the visa holder is from Hong Kong).

This visa allows employers to bring skilled workers from overseas in situations where they are unable to find an Australian resident who is appropriately skilled.

The visa is available to a person whose occupation is an Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) occupation listed in Major Groups 1,2,4,5 or 6, where the nominated salary for the position meets the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (currently $141,210PA).

Listed occupations include:

  • chief executive
  • engineer
  • medical practitioner
  • healthcare assistant

You can search an occupation to see whether it is a listed occupation here.

Labour agreement stream

The labour agreement stream is available to workers who have a labour agreement.

A labour agreement is a formal agreement between the Australian government and an employer or industry. It allows employers to sponsor overseas workers in occupations or under conditions not covered by the other skilled in demand visas.

Persons who enter into labour agreements are also eligible for other classes of visas such as the Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (subclass 186) and the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (subclass 494).

The requirements under a visa issued to a person on a labour agreement may be different to those on other classes of visas – for example, they may be allowed to have a lower level of proficiency in English or be subject to a lower salary threshold.

Conditions of the Skills in Demand visa

A person on a Skills in Demand visa must comply with the following conditions:

  • to work in the occupation and for the employer that sponsored them, unless changing jobs under the jobs mobility provisions
  • if switching jobs, to find a new sponsor within 180 days
  • to be paid at or above the required income threshold
  • in a role that is real, full-time and aligned with Australian labour market needs
  • not working in a second job unless expressly approved.

The different streams of Skills in Demand visa have additional conditions attached to them. All applicants must also pass the police and character checks. Family members are often included on the visa and partners are often granted work rights.

Duration of the skills in demand visa

The specialist skills stream of the visa is valid for up to four years. If the visa holder is from Hong Kong, it has a maximum length of five years.

Cost

At present, the cost of this visa is $3210.
